Christmas @ the LaLanne's

No, I didn't find my camera, but luckily everyone else and their dogs had a camera on Christmas, so I have a few pictures of Christmas, courtesy of my mother-in-law.

Jello Jigglers!

And the fun begins! We love stockings filled with goodies:)

Santa left me some of my very favorite: clif bars!

Everyone was intrigued by Austin's new Guitar Hero for Nintendo DS

Apparently I make a good pillow.

Christmas Lesson

Since I still have no clue where my camera is and have no fun pictures to post, I thought I would post my Christmas lesson that I gave in Young Women's on Sunday. I had a little wooden box that I told the girls to imagine was Mary's. Maybe Joseph had carved it for her, or, maybe even Jesus. I had the box filled with items that I thought Mary would have kept from the night Christ was born and then went through each of them one by one. Here's an idea of what I said about each item:

Straw: This piece of straw reminds us of the lowly circumstances in which the Savior of the world was born. Because there was no room in the inn, Joseph and Mary stayed in the stable, with the animals. When the Lamb of God was born, he was placed in a manger. A manger would have usually served as a feeding trough for the animals. Elevated from the floor of the contaminated stable, this was probably the cleanest place for the child to be placed.

Swaddling clothes: There are two references made in Luke 2 to His being wrapped in swaddling clothes. In a Christmas devotional, Elder Russell M Nelson said this:

“I sense significance beyond the use of an ordinary diaper and receiving blanket.
Instead of those four words: “wrapped in swaddling clothes” in the English text, only one word is needed in the Greek New Testament. That word is sparganoo, which means to envelop a newborn child with special cloth, strips of which were passed from side to side. The cloth would probably bear unique family identification. That procedure was especially applicable to the birth of a firstborn son.
You remember the announcement of an angel at the birth of Jesus: ‘This shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger’ (Luke 2:12). His wrappings surely would have been distinctive.” -Elder Russell M Nelson

Candle: The only light they would have had available to them in the stable is that of a candle. However, this candle symbolizes much more than that. On the night that the Savior was born, a new star appeared that was far brighter than the rest. This in part shows us that He is the light of the world and that He lights the way for us all.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the wise men traveled from a far, following the star with exceeding great joy. The star led them to where they saw the young child with his mother, Mary. They fell on their knees and worshipped him. They presented the gifts that they had brought, which revealed something of whom Jesus is and what he came to do.
The account of the wise men is given in Matthew. Why did Matthew go through the trouble of identifying the gifts that the wise men brought? Possibility: to fulfill the prophecy that Isaiah foretold that gold and incense would be brought by gentiles to honor the heavenly King

Gold: This gift was given to honor Christ as a King. Of course he had no need of a crown of gold to demonstrate to the world his kingship because His kingdom is not of this world. He was not a monarch like Caesar or Cleopatra who ruled over a limited territory for a limited amount of time. Christ was there at creation and is King over the entire universe. He does not rule by force, but by love. And, as King of Kings on earth he would wear a different kind of crown – a crown of thorns.

Frankincense: This gift symbolized Christ’s priestly role. This was used for worship in the temples. The function of a priest is to open the way to God for men. Jesus made it possible for man to enter into the very presence of God. He gave the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of the world. This gift also signifies that Christ himself is worthy of worship. Not only would this child lead people to worship God, but he too would be worshipped.

Myrrh: This was a gift for a Savior. This is the strangest and most shocking gift. Like gold and frankincense, Myrrh was a valuable commodity, even more costly than gold. Myrrh was used to embalm the bodies of the dead. Who would give embalming fluid to a King, much less a child king? What would this represent? But the gift was prophetic just like the others. Jesus came into the world to live for man, and in the end, to die for man. He came to give eternal life.

The gifts that the wise men brought to Jesus are the reason why we offer gifts to one another on Christmas day. As we contemplate the gifts of the wise men, we can give thanks and remember Him. We also present gifts to symbolize the gifts that Christ has given us. His gifts were freedom to the oppressed, forgiveness to the repentant, hope to the despairing, and light in the darkness. He gave us His love, His service, and His life. And most importantly, He gave us and all mortals resurrection, salvation, and eternal life. We should strive to give as He gave.

I then told all of the girls this:

To give of oneself is a holy gift. This Christmas, I would like each of you to look inside your hearts and think of one gift that you can present to the Savior. It could be a character trait that you would like to develop (such as kindness or charity), to improve on a weakness that is hindering your relationship with Him, or a service that you would like to give. What is one thing that you can offer Him that will bring you closer to Him?

I gave them all a piece of paper and envelope and told them that when they had some quiet time at home, they should ponder what gift they would like to present to the Savior. Then they should write that down, put it in their envelope and place the envelope in their Christmas tree. After Christmas, they could take the envelope and keep it in their journal or scriptures to help them remember.

Just a little note...

I am so frustrated! I can't find my camera anywhere and I need it. Grrrrr.... I mean, it's the holiday season, there are about 50 million reasons why I need my camera!

Anyway, last thursday night/friday morning I hit up the carlsbad outlet center for midnight shopping madness and scored some sweet boots, but I had a problem: the boots require skinny jeans. I didn't want to spend money on a new pair of jeans that I would only wear occasionally, and I haven't been able to find a pair that I felt fit well anyway (every single pair that I've found have been slightly too low waisted to look flattering on me). SO, I decided to take matters into my own hands... I took a great fitting pair of my own flare-leg jeans that I don't wear all that often (they were too long and I hadn't gotten around to hemming them yet) and converted them into skinny jeans! They look great! And, seeing as how I have somewhat expensive taste in jeans, I saved myself so much money! I'm excited to wear them, and excited that it's a bit chilly today so that I can wear them with my boots. Woo-hoo!

P.S. Does anyone have extra tickets for the stake Christmas concert tomorrow? I need 3 please!

It's Official

I'm old. I know my birthday hasn't come yet (p.s. that's in 22 days), but that really has nothing to do with it. I've become an old fogie (is that how you spell it? i dunno). Anyway, this is why:

Yep, it's true. I've started using a pill box. Not that I have millions of meds to take, in fact the only thing I take is a multi-vitamin. I just always forget if I have taken my vitamin on any given day and then I am afraid that if I take one when I already have, I'll get sick from overdosing on the vitamins, and yes, that is possible. I inherited my mother's fabulous memory,(which is actually not so fabulous). If you know her well, then you know what I mean (she forgets everything! love you mom!) So, I started using this fabulous little box so that I will always know whether or not I have taken my vitamins. It works great, and I actually love it. It just makes me feel old. I wonder what I'll feel like when I really AM old.

p.s. James uses one too, so I guess that makes it better, since we can be old fogies together:)

My tag invention: Twilight!

Friday Katie and I went to see Twilight. I really didn't have high hopes for it, considering that the previews seemed a little weird to me and I didn't really agree with the casting choices, but overall, I liked it. I don't think it would have been possible to make it so that everyone would agree with the casting choices (obviously, since everyone has their own idea of what Edward and Bella look like), but I still think they could have done a better job with casting. Since James was out camping last night and I seem to have insomnia when he's not here, I spent some time browsing through actors/actresses online, trying to decide who I would have picked and then decided to create my own blog tag: the Twilight Tag!

Pick one actor who you think would make a good Edward and one actress who think would make a good Bella and then post it on your blog. These are my picks:

Nick Zano (from What I Like About You)

Emma Watson (she's in Harry Potter, in case you've been hiding under a rock for the last 6 or 7 years)

Both of them would need to make their hair darker, but that's an easy fix. I'm sure there are plenty of people who disagree with me, but these two are the closest to what I imagine Edward and Bella to be. Plus, Nick Zano is much more "my type" than Robert Pattinson, and of course he would have to be in order to fit what I would imagine Edward to look like. I'm sure that if you were to pick someone to play Edward, he would end up being "your type" too.

I tag: Katie, Erin, and anyone else who loves Twilight!

America's Next Top Model Is...

...ME!
Okay, maybe not for real, but it certainly was fun playing super model for a day!

My FABULOUS friend, Heidi Andrews, is the creator of these awesome headbands. Aren't they sweet-tastic? She and her sister are starting up this new business and needed some photos for their show room in L.A. So lucky me got to be one of the models. I think it's so cool:) Thanks for thinking of me Heidi!

Human Nature

...is a funny thing. One thing in particular strikes me as interesting right now. The whole "I want what I can't have" conundrum. At this point in time, I really want some cold weather, however, a few months ago I was going crazy needing warm weather. I mean seriously, I went to Vegas for a weekend with the simple motivation of finding not just warm, but HOT weather. Now I have that. Hot, beautiful weather. And all I want is cold, rainy weather. I'm trying to make myself get over it. But how do you get over wanting what you can't have?

I suggest to myself: Self, embrace what you have! Live in the now!

So I'm thinking of going to the beach today. I can't go for long, but I never really like going for too long anyway. And maybe on my way home I'll get myself some frozen yogurt (I know, ~gasp!~ Christy getting frozen yogurt? what a surprise! but I actually haven't had any in quite a while).

Hopefully this will help me not be crazy, but then again, I'm not sure that there's too much hope for me to not be crazy... it's in my genes!

I was tagged by I think 3 different people for this one, but being the major procrastinator that I am, I never did it. So, I've decided to stop the cycle of procrastination and just do it!

Instructions: Go to your 4th picture folder and upload the 4th picture

Remember how once-upon-a-time, I had blonde hair? Weird, huh? Anyway, this is James and I on the Maid of the Mist at Niagara Falls. It was so freakin' cool! This was day 1 of our fabulous anniversary trip starting at Niagara and ending in New York City. It was awesome:)

I Love

Poppies! I think it's safe to say that poppies are my favorite flower. Imagine my delight when I checked etsy today and the main page was everything poppy. There were so many things that I just loved, but this was my absolute favorite:

On a side note, my good friend Heidi Andrews asked me to model for her new company, True Birds, yesterday. They make the cutest designer head bands and I got to get all dolled up and pretend to be America's Next Top Model. It was super fun! (thanks Heidi!) Anyway, Ill post some of the pics when I get them, so keep checking back!

Hope you're all having a fabulous week!

A sad story:(

Once upon a time the weather man told me it was going to rain.

I was oh-so-very-happy! ("I get to wear my rain boots!" I thought to myself)

But then...

...he changed his mind and said it would be cloudy instead.

Clouds with no rain? Now where's the fun in that?

Stinkin' weather man!

Random Thoughts

Why do so many educated people mis-pronounce the word "nuclear"? I'm not sure why, but it drives me crazy! So many times in tv shows or movies you hear the actors say nuke-yu-ler and that is not how it is supposed to be pronounced! Even Pres. Bush does it! I mean really people! The word is nuke-lee-ar! I know I'm crazy, but we just went to a movie and a couple of the actors mis-pronounced it and it just got me to thinking...

Anyway... I am in a never ending cycle of messy/clean house. Our house is either really clean or really messy. This is how it goes: after I clean the house really well I get into a crazy-clean mode. I make sure to pick up after myself (& my lovely, extremely messy husband) constantly. But eventually I get sick of picking up after James (and, to be fair, myself) all the time and give up. Within two days the house is disastrously messy (when you have a small house it can happen quickly) and I just let it be messy for a couple days, maybe even a week and it gets progressively messier. Then I start getting frustrated at having such a messy house and it takes me a half a day to clean everything up again and the cycle continues. Why can't I just find a happy medium?

And one more: my food storage idea! (just a little one) When preparing emergency supplies, you're supposed to get things that you like and eat regularly so you won't hate the food you have come an emergency. Well, that's a little hard for us considering that we live off of cereal, hot pockets, and eating out. But I thought of a good snacky/lunch food that is yummy and nutritious and so easy... peanut butter & jelly sandwiches on graham crackers. Graham crackers are made with whole grains and the peanut butter is a great source of protein. I'm not saying you could live off of just those by any means, but mmm mmm....

Do I really need to explain how fabulous these boots are?

Why to vote YES on prop 8

  • Proposition 8 is NOT about civil rights. Gay couples in a domestic partnership already receive the same rights as married couples in California (i.e. Registered domestic partners shall have the same rights, protections, and benefits, and shall be subject to the same responsibilities, obligations, and duties under law, whether they derive from statutes, administrative regulations, court rules, government policies, common law, or any other provisions or sources of law, as are granted to and imposed upon spouses.)
  • California voters already let their voices be heard and voted in favor of preserving marriage. The courts should not decide the will of the people!
  • Although the opposition says that our children will not be affected, THEY WILL. Look at what is happening in Massachusetts: 1st graders are being read fairy tales about princes falling in love with other princes, and parents were told they had no right to know when these types of lessons were being taught, and NO RIGHT to decide if their child received this lesson. If prop 8 does not pass, parents will lose their rights.
  • Religious freedom is endanger of being infringed upon. Churches may be forced to perform same-sex marriages!

I hope that everyone will take the time to think these things over. I take no issue with those couples who decide to live in a same-sex relationship, I simply want to preserve the meaning of one word: Marriage. Marriage is sacred, please help preserve it!

Check this out...

Christmas is coming up and I know how hard it can be to figure out what to get people sometimes. Here is a site that has all sorts of cute/crafty stuff that can make great gifts (for others or for yourself!):

Currently there are some super cute frames and boxes, but I know she will be updating pretty soon with some magnet boards and magnets, along with lots of other great stuff.

I hope you all like it:)

My New Best Friend

I got a puppy! James and I love to go to Julian on Sunday afternoons. Sometimes we find a trail and take a nice nature stroll and sometimes we go into town and do some people watching (there are some rather interesting people to watch in Julian). Well, this time was a people watching day, and while we were strolling down the street we saw a lady on the corner selling puppies for 20 bucks! I've been wanting to get a dog for about 2 years now and although it was Sunday, I really couldn't pass this up (dogs at the pet store are like $1500!). Anyway, she's a Chow-Chow/St. Bernard mix and just so stinkin' adorable.

As cute as she is, I know I'm in for some hard work getting her trained. She woke me up every two hours last night! I went to the store today and got her some potty pads and a crate and a book about how to housetrain your dog. I'm going to try and keep her up until I go to bed tonight in hopes that she'll sleep a little longer between wake ups... I mean, you all know how I treasure my beauty sleep. I guess it's good training for having babies:)

p.s. after much deliberation, I think we've settled on a name: Moose

San Diego SUPER CHARGERS!

First of all, a little history about my experience with football:

Once upon a time, I was cheerleader (in high school). The only thing I understood about football was that touchdowns were good. After high school, I forgot about football until I married James. The first year we were married I would get so bothered that James "had" to watch the game every week. I mean, really, he was supposed to be paying attention to me ALL of the time, right? Well, I learned quickly that James was not going to stop watching football, so the second football season into our marriage I sat down and learned to like it. Now, I LOVE it. I am still learning, and the more I learn about it, the more I like it. But mostly, I love spending time with my hubby. He's always teaching me more about the game, and every great play is a reason to celebrate. Basically, I love James, and that is why I love football.

Anyway, I bought tickets to the Monday night game a while ago for Father's day (I know, I'm the best). Needless to say, it was awesome.

We're so excited!

Don't you just love the home-made jersey James is wearing? Yep, I made it.

Dennis Quaid!

We got to the stadium about an hour and a half before the game started. It was pretty cool to watch the players warm up. Chris Chambers walked by right below us and threw his gloves to some kids in the stands, who were of course pretty stoked about it.

Good friends, good game. What more could you ask for?

Check out the view behind us. The Stadium was packed!

Notice the Jets fan behind us. We sat on the Jets side, so there were of course a few of them. There was one Jets fan that I found particularly amusing, though. He would be super loud and in-your-face when the Jets had the ball, and then sit down and sulk when we had it.

You have GOT to be kidding me.

Chargers. I think that says it all. Today was an incredibly stressful game for me to watch. It's funny that I care about football so much when I used to not care at all, but at any rate, I do care. And today we got robbed. Whoever the ref was today sucked. There were 2 plays that he called soooo wrong, and because of it we lost by 1 point. 1 freaking point! I don't want to go into to it too much, but I just had to have my voice heard. We should have won, no question about it. Stupid ref.

Ode to running

I love running. Granted, I don't always stick with it like I should, but never the less, I love it. I have a handful of races that I am going to be running in this fall and I have officially started my training program for them. Why do I love running so much you ask? Well, here are a few reasons.

1. A true sense of accomplishment.

At the beginning of this year running a half mile was extremely difficult. I would huff and puff and give up pretty darn fast. After a couple months of perservernce, I can now run at least 6 miles without stopping... granted I don't run 6 miles at a time often, but... Even now, running gets to be tough, but I KNOW that I can do it. After every run I think back to the parts of that run that I wanted to stop but didn't, and it makes me realize that I can accomplish just about anything if I truly want to.

2. I don't think any work out can kick your butt as much as running can.

When I finish a run, I feel tired, but good tired. Like my body is saying "Thank you!"

3. Running is therapy.

I get to just think without having anything to distract me. Even when I'm by myself at home, I get distracted easily. But when I'm running, there is no escaping my thoughts and I really am able to sort things out... it keeps me grounded.

These are just a few reasons, but there are many, many more.

I'm telling you, if you are not a runner, you should be. Even if you think you can't or you won't like it, you're wrong. You just take it slow, and before you know it, you'll be running farther than you ever thought you could!

This picture keeps me motivated.

A couple of weeks ago James' parents celebrated their 40th anniversary and we had a big ol' party to help them celebrate. It was a surprise for them down at the Hotel Del Coronado with family and some of their very best friends. Good thing there are people in our family who take pictures, because we of course forgot our camera... thanks Nicole!

40 years... wow!

One day our kids will be throwing us an anniversary party:)

Now a days, lasting marriages are hard to come by and I am so grateful that James and I have two wonderful examples of healthy, happy marriages to follow. Not that either of our parents read this blog, but thank you SO much to James' parents and my parents:)
